Mariner Wealth Advisors’ Glennon On Alternative Investment Education

Michael Glennon, Vice President, Private Investments for Mariner Wealth Advisors joined Julie Cooling, Founder and CEO of RIA Channel, at the CAIS Alternative Investment Summit to discuss educating advisors and clients before allocating to alternative investments.

With over 1,400 advisors at Mariner, there is a great diversity in Mariner’s advisors and their clients.  While some advisors focus on mass affluent clients, others offer services to ultra-high-net-worth clients.

Mariner has worked with CAIS to expand optionality for private investments for clients and advisors.  The firm offers access to 15 to 20 diverse offerings from high-conviction managers across private credit, real assets, private equity, and venture capital. These private investment opportunities are designed to be differentiated, compelling, and interesting to clients across the range from mass affluent to ultra-high-net-worth and for diverse liquidity profiles.

Education is needed to get advisors and clients up to speed on alternative investments.  In addition to due diligence and information regarding specific asset managers, education is needed about how alternative structures differ from traditional investments, such as J-curves and liquidity profiles from drawdown funds to semi-liquid funds, such as interval funds and tender offer funds.  Mariner uses the CAIS IQ platform to educate advisors on the specifics of alternative investments strategies and asset classes.
