Jon Porter, Chief Executive Officer, Three Bell Capital met with Julie Cooling, Founder & CEO, RIA Channel to discuss the firm’s startup mentality and approach to growth.
Three Bell Capital, based in Silicon Valley, doesn’t want to be just another cookie cutter financial planning firm. In 2016, Porter’s firm was ranked #1 on RIA Channel’s Top 100 Emerging Wealth Managers List. At the time, Three Bell Capital was completing a roughly $700 million acquisition, bringing its AUM to nearly $1.2 billion. “We wanted to drop the ’emerging’ and just be at the top of the list,” says Porter. Today Three Bell Capital is quickly approaching $2 billion in assets under management and is nationally recognized for its corporate retirement planning and comprehensive wealth services.
Porter’s North Star is an unwavering emphasis on differentiated client service. “What’s good for a business is not necessarily good for a client,” says Porter on the industry trend of commoditized investment management. One way Three Bell seeks to stand out is through custom client portfolios. The extensive discovery process and client input ultimately leads to better communication, clearer expectations, and the potential for better performance, Porter explains. On the investment side, Three Bell adds value through its in-house management of fixed-income portfolios, a best-in-class global equities manager, and access to alpha generating, alternative investments.
Three Bell Capital’s rapid growth, shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to organic growth, the firm has continued to attract new advisors to join the team. “We purposely look for individuals who have a client-first mentality,” says Porter on assembling a cohesive team of advisors. The result, believes Porter, is a talented group that collectively exceeds the sum of its parts. “Who knows, at the end of the year we may be crossing some exciting milestones,” says Porter.
