Jeremy Held, Managing Director, Bow River Capital joined Julie Cooling, Founder & CEO, RIA Channel to discuss the state of private equity and how advisors can tap into the alternative asset class.
Today, fewer companies are going public and the ones that do, are waiting significantly longer. Since the dot.com heyday just twenty years ago, the average number of IPOs per year have been cut in half. While public markets have had strong performance over the last decade, there is a massive universe of private companies inaccessible to the average investor.
“The private markets have never been more important,” says Held. Traditionally, high minimums, long periods of illiquidity, and risk factors have kept most investors and advisors away from private investing.
Bow River Capital, a Denver-based private equity manager, is setting out to transform the way investors access private equity with the launch of their Evergreen Fund.
The Bow River Capital Evergreen fund, delivers institutional-grade access to the private equity sector, but with some of the same benefits of a mutual fund. The Evergreen Fund’s interval fund wrapper provides quarterly liquidity, lower minimums, and an easier way for advisors to achieve a consistent targeted allocation to the private sector. Designed to replicate an institutional private equity portfolio, the fund is diversified by sector and sponsor.
Bow River, specializing in the lower middle markets, aims to identify established companies in areas where the firm can add operating expertise. Held oversees the strategic direction of Bow River’s registered asset management business including investment oversight, research and product development.
Prior to joining Bow River Capital, Held was the Chief Investment Officer at ALPS Advisors, a Denver-based asset manager that specializes in real assets and alternative investments. As CIO, Jeremy was responsible for all aspects of the ALPS Asset Management business and ultimately helped it grow to more than $20 billion in AUM.
