Chris Wilson, CFA, Senior Client Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income, Voya Investment Management discusses the evolving fixed income landscape, and what role it should play in today’s portfolio.
A traditional allocation to fixed income is designed to fulfill portfolio needs such as diversification, income and capital preservation. Over past three decades, the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index’s (“Agg”) has delivered on each of the three objectives.
However, Wilson explains why the Agg’s one-size fits all approach may not continue to realize the same levels of success in future decades. Wilson points to the Agg’s declining yield and rising duration as key indicators of a changing risk profile. Voya’s fixed income models aim to provide a customized risk/return solution and are designed to meet a variety of client objectives.
Chris Wilson is head of the fixed income client portfolio management team and a senior client portfolio manager at Voya Investment Management. Prior to joining Voya, Chris was head of the North America fixed income client portfolio management team at AllianceBernstein, where he began his career and served in multiple roles including fixed income portfolio manager, currency trader, quantitative analyst and head of fixed income product management. Chris earned a BS in mathematics/management from LeMoyne College and is a CFA® Charterholder.

Over the last 30 years, index yield has accounted for nearly all of the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index’s (“Agg”) future total return. As the Agg has trended lower, so has the total return. With the index yield currently at all-time lows it’s clear that, over the next decade, traditional fixed income strategies can no longer do it all.
Chris Wilson, Senior Client Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income, will discuss why today’s environment calls for a new approach to fixed income portfolio construction, including:
- The role, and goal, of a fixed income portfolio
- Going back to square one with the Agg
- Challenges with the Agg today
- Modeling fixed income solutions today
