Over the last twenty years, the value of sports franchises has risen at twice the rate of the S&P 500 Index with less volatility.1 Historically, these investments were only available to direct owners, many of whom are billionaires. From 2019 to 2021, the NBA, MLB, NHL, and MLS instituted relaxed ownership rules, allowing up to 30% of team ownership to be held by external investors. Investors are now allowed to invest in multiple franchises in each league.
