Joseph Cusick, Senior Vice President for Calamos Investments, joined Keith Black, Managing Director of RIA Channel, to discuss investing in the equity market with reduced downside risk.
Calamos has launched actively managed ETFs with the objective of principal protection. These ETFs offer 100% principal protection for one year with capped upside, perhaps 7% or more, to the equity market. Indices covered include the S&P 500, the Nasdaq-100, and the Russell 2000.
By holding the ETF for its full one-year term, investor gains qualify for long-term capital gains tax treatment. These ETFs are attractive to investors who have retired or are nearing retirement, as well as investors who are planning to use the investment for a particular purchase.
Other investors interested in principal-protected ETFs are those looking to move cash into the market and those who want to protect significant gains without completely exiting the equity market. As the Federal Reserve continues to decrease interest rates, the returns earned on principal-protected products become even more attractive relative to cash investments.
The Calamos Alternative Nasdaq and Bond ETF (CANQ) combines fixed-income holdings with long call options on the Nasdaq-100 Index, providing uncapped upside with yields above the risk-free rate. This ETF seeks to participate in approximately 65% of the upside and 15% of the downside returns of the Nasdaq-100 Index.
