The Future of ETF Distribution

ETF Model Portfolios

Overview

Financial advisors increasingly understand their value proposition is not always their stock-picking savvy or ability to construct a bond portfolio. As the industry moves towards holistic wealth management and “goal-based” planning, the need to turn over asset management to third-party strategists has increased. In fact, across channels, at least 74 percent of advisors use either models created in-house by the advisor themselves or by an in-house investment team, or outsourced to asset managers and strategists (source: Cerulli Associates).

In this three-hour virtual event, we will explore the growth in the managed account business and reasons for the rise in its popularity. Attendees will learn how to incorporate MAs into their practice, how to mix and match different types of MAs, and provide our outlook of the future of this distribution model.

1pm - 2pm ET
Managed Account Basics: What you need to know

Models-based solutions can help you simplify and scale your practice, deliver cost-effective portfolios to your clients, and strengthen your firm’s investment process. Implementing a models-based practice seeks to assist you in focusing on your clients as they continue to demand more of your time, advice, and guidance. As your business — and demand for your skills — grows, leveraging additional portfolio construction resources can help you find the time to concentrate on what matters most: your clients.

In this session, we’ll discuss the current landscape and requirements of model-based investing, the value of outsourcing, how to implement model portfolios, and outline specific model-based strategies that fit a variety of investment objectives. Participant questions are encouraged and will be fielded at the end of the session.

2pm - 3pm ET
Top Advisor Q&A On Managed Accounts

Many advisors are outsourcing some or all of their investment management services using ETF models, managed accounts, and other solutions. Hear answers to key questions top advisors face as they make the decision to outsource. Considerations we'll cover in this session:

  • Top Advisor Questions on Outsourcing
  • Manager Selection and Model Due Diligence
  • Performance Issues, Risks and Client Perceptions
  • Differentiating Your Practice
3pm - 4pm ET
How to Use Managed Accounts in Portfolio Construction

Now that we’ve looked at the growth of model portfolios and reasons for their proliferation, how does an advisor actually use a model in portfolio construction? Our asset manager panel will discuss how to implement models, pitfalls to watch for, tips for selecting a model strategist, and what to look for in an ideal model template.

After learning equity options from Mercury Founders Jon and Pete Najarian at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) in the 1990s, Mr. Kilburg was offered an opportunity in the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) bond option pit. Risk management was imperative as he transitioned his floor operations into a SEC registered investment advisory firm in 2012.
