Simeon Hyman, Global Investment Strategist, ProShares discusses the opportunity in e-commerce, and how advisors can take advantage of retail’s rapidly evolving landscape.
Brick and Mortar retail stores have been on the decline long before COVID-19 restrictions shuttered doors and kept the traditional client base at home. Over the last five years, many once thriving box stores have filed for bankruptcy and closed down physical store locations at an unprecedented rate. On the flip side, improvements in technology and connectivity have led to widespread adoption of online shopping.
The ProShares Online Retail ETF (ONLN) aims to capture the long-term growth opportunity in e-commerce, investing in industry leaders like Amazon and Aliaba. While the ProShares Long Online / Short Stores ETF (CLIX) allows investors to ride the e-commerce wave and bet against brick and mortar in a single ETF. CLIX combines a 100% long position on leading online retailers, with a 50% short position on physical store based companies.
Representing nearly $50 billion in assets, thematic ETFs are a big part of the market. Thematic ETFs allow investors access to certain parts of the market that may be ignored by major indexes or strategies.
