ProShares On The PAWZ Pet Care ETF & Thematic Investing

Troy Goldstein, Executive Director, National Accounts, Scott Helfstein, PhD, Executive Director, Thematic Investing and Daniel Bush, CFA, Senior Analyst, Investment Strategy at ProShares discuss why the pet care industry is well-positioned in 2022 and how advisors can incorporate thematic strategies into their portfolio.

Ownership of pets has risen to nearly 70% of households in the U.S. Not only are pets more prevalent, but the humanization of our furry friends has led to a boost in consumer spending. Compared to traditional human pharma, the animal healthcare industry offers a faster product approval period, deeper customer relationships, and a cash vs. payer-based market. The rising middle class, innovative technologies, and global trade channels will continue to expand opportunities for the pet care industry as a whole.

The global pandemic has only exacerbated this trend. According to the ASPCA, roughly 23 million American households adopted a pet during the pandemic and roughly 35% of pet owners increased their pet care spending over the last year.

The ProShares Pet Care ETF (PAWZ) is the first ETF dedicated to the pet care industry. PAWZ invests in key sub industries like pet food manufacturing, vet services, internet pet and supply retail, vet pharmaceuticals, pet supply stores, vet diagnostics, pet supplies manufacturing, and vet product distributors and consists of U.S. and international companies. PAWZ aims to capitalize on the humanization of pets and the rapidly expanding pet industry.

Thematic ETFs allow investors to access or overweight certain parts of the market that may otherwise be ignored by major indexes. Sector performance, and sales growth metrics can also provide key indicators of industry leaders and laggards.
