In-Kind Investing Explained: Bringing Clients’ Digital Assets Into the Plan

Many advisors have clients who hold digital assets outside the advisory relationship. In-kind investing is one way to bring those holdings into the plan: an eligible investor contributes an underlying asset directly in exchange for shares of an investment product, rather than selling for cash first. This educational webinar will explore what that can mean for clients, from institutional custody to simpler estate planning, and for advisors, from bringing held-away assets into the conversation to addressing concentrated positions. Topics for discussion:

  • The client starting point: common ways clients hold digital assets today, including self-custody, exchanges, and DeFi
  • The client benefits: such as reducing self-custody risk with institutional custody, simplifying estate planning in account types with joint tenancy, and owning the exposure alongside other financial assets
  • The advisor benefits: including bringing held-away assets into the advisory relationship, delivering a more comprehensive financial plan and banking services, and addressing diversification
  • Planning flexibility: how investment product share exposure may interact with margin and collateral use, listed options strategies, and estate planning
